Similar to the attack of Pearl harbor, 9/11 was a disappointing victory for America’s enemies. But, in both of these victories the success of these attacks did not go the way  they were originally planned to go. The Japanese scored an important victory at Pearl Harbor, but the attack lead to World War II,  and four years later Japan was defeated. Similarly, al Qaeda’s attacks that came out of the sky 15 years ago were a surprise to the people of America. Almost 3,000 people were dead, and many hundreds of billions of dollars of damage was done to the US economy.

For so long the two great oceans (Atlantic and Pacific) have protected America from it’s enemies. Yet, for all the success that al Qaeda received from this 9/11 attack it miserably failed. The attack had achieved the opposite of what Osama had wanted. After 9/11’s “success” in Afghanistan the victory was not so decisive for the United States. Instead, it just lead to the American forces continuing to be at war with a number of jihadist groups (most recently ISIS.) When the Congress the authorization for America to use the Military Forces immediately after the 9/11 attack, no one could have imagined this authorization would continue to be the basis for American wars that would persist for ten and a half years.

Osama bin Laden had hoped that attacking the US would create and add pressure on the American leaders to reduce their support on the Middle East regimes. Bin Laden particularly wanted to put pressure on the United States to pull its troops out of Saudi Arabia, because his goal was to over through the Saudi Royal family. On a video that was released four weeks after 9/11, bin Laden made his first public statement since the attacks on New York and Washington. He said,  “neither America nor the people who live in it will dream of security before we live it in Palestine, and not before all the infidel armies leave the land of Muhammad.” Bin Laden has terribly misjudged the American responses to 9/11, because he labored under the delusion that the United States was weak, and powerless.
