Nirvana, an extremely important part of history in rock n roll. Their music shaped the grunge era and brought out alternative rock into the mainstream. So, here’s the history of Nirvana. The lead singer Kurt Cobain grew up with listening to the Beatles then metal. Eventually, his tastes in music his way into the punk scene by meeting the Melvin’s. Which was an underground punk band which some of the band members occasionally playing with him. With this, he met Chris Novoselic who shared the same interest in punk. So, they both decided to form the Stiff woodies and went through many vocalists and guitarists. After getting a new drummer called Chad Channing, they decided to rename the band to Nirvana in 1986. During 1987, the band was signed into the record label sub pop. The band recorded their first single, Love buzz.

During the time, the label pulled a marketing stunt portraying the band as logging town hicks. The duo didn’t like it due to them feeling alienated their redneck hometown before forming Nirvana. In 1989, the band recorded their debut album Bleach for just 600 dollars. Bleach didn’t make them worldwide famous but got the band rolling as they were now played on college radio. The album sold around 35,000 during the time which attracted the attention of major record labels. During 1990, they released the single Silver with producer Butch Vig. The band finally got a permanent drummer which was Dave Grhol. They later signed on with the major label DGC for around 300,000 to record their next album, Nevermind. The second album was expected to be just moderately successful. It became an instant hit across the nation as all 50,000 copies that were shipped were sold out. With its album single smells like teen spirit reaching the into the American top 10. Nevermind had become a certified triple platinum in just 5 months. The entire music industry was taken by surprise, as they topple Michael Jackson Dangerous from the charts. The band didn’t know how to the success as they didn’t expect it. They usually didn’t play live normally as other bands did. As on certain occasions, such as kissing each other and destroying their instruments. However, many questioned the band’s stability.

As Kurt Cobain and his wife Courtney Love were rumored to be heavy heroin users as the band canceled several concerts and tours. Cobain tried to cover this up by saying he had chronic stomach troubles, which was true. But the heroin rumors just continued to grow. When Love gave birth to her daughter, a Vanity fair article claimed that she was using heroin when pregnant. Which opted child services to take their daughter away from them, but they got the baby custody back in 1993. As it was clear as day that the band was going through some problems. The label decided to just scope up a bunch of b sides and called it incesticde. Which was moderately successful as it reached number 39 in the U.S. Nirvana began to be prepared to create their next album in utero with their producer Steve Albini. But after the completion of the album, allegations and rumors struck the band again.

As Cobain suffered from a drug overdose in May 2 which was hidden from the press, he them later locked himself inside the bathroom threatening suicide the following month. In July, he suffered another drug overdose and it was also reported that the label was unhappy with the final production. All and all, both Nirvana and DGC denied these allegations. In Utero released in September of 1993 to commercial success and good reviews. But when the couple decided to stay in Rome for a vacation on March 4, Cobain tried to commit suicide by overdosing on alcohol and tranquilizers. His mental illness continued to grow as he went back to Seattle for hospitalization. Love and the band members helped Cobain be admitted into a recovery center in L.A. Unfortunately, he escaped the clinic on April 1. They filed a missing person’s report before the day Cobain shot himself in the head. His body was found on April 8. With no one to fill in his role due to Cobain important significance in the band. They broke up with Novoselic and Grhol moving on to other projects. Grhol managed to generate new success with his new band, the foo fighters.
