People have been debating over the use of guns for quite some time. As many people know, guns are legal in the US. Both sides of the debate make good arguments about their beliefs on guns. However, I  strongly believe that the average person should not be allowed to own a gun.

The first point should be obvious. There are way too many people killed by guns every year. According to www.bbc.com, “Approximately 500,000 people around the world are killed by guns each year. In terms of developed countries, the biggest losses are in the US, where citizens own 300 to 350 million guns in total. There, gun homicide rates are more than 25 times higher than the combined rate of other high-income nations.” There are a lot of guns owned by Americans, and because of that, a lot of people killed by guns. If almost nobody owned guns, few people would be shot. Obviously, this would result in fewer deaths and injuries.

Guns are rarely ever used in self defense. According to gun-control.procon.org, “Of the 29,618,300 violent crimes committed between 2007 and 2011, 0.79% of victims (235,700) protected themselves with a threat of use or use of a firearm, the least-employed protective behavior. [16] In 2010 there were 230 ‘justifiable homicides’ in which a private citizen used a firearm to kill a felon, compared to 8,275 criminal gun homicides (or, 36 criminal homicides for every ‘justifiable homicide’). [17] Of the 84,495,500 property crimes committed between 2007 and 2011, 0.12% of victims (103,000) protected themselves with a threat of use or use of a firearm.” Not everyone owns a gun. Even those who do, don’t have it on them all the time to use for self-defense. People who are being attacked by someone with a gun, won’t have enough time to prepare. Meanwhile, the criminals are all going to have guns on them and be ready to shoot.

The majority of guns used in mass shootings were legally purchased. On vittana.org, it says “Mother Jones reviewed over 70 mass shootings in the United States that covered more than 3 decades of incidents. They discovered that in nearly 75% of the incidents they looked at, the firearms used to take lives were legally purchased. By creating more restrictions on legal purchases, it may be possible to reduce the number of mass casualty incidents that occur.” If we banned the purchase of guns, there would be less people who may eventually start a shooting that own guns. Since less of those people own guns, there will be less mass shootings. Yes, some people may still get their guns illegally, but those shootings can’t be stopped even if guns are legal. In total, there will be a lot less mass shootings.

There will always be irresponsible gun owners. According to www.theodysseyonline.com,  “This ties in with the first one in a way. People are irresponsible, accidents happen, cabinets are left open, children are left unattended and guns are left lying around because some people have no regard for safety.” There are many ways a mishandled gun could go wrong. There are around 500 accidental deaths using firearms in just one year! That number could go down to zero if the US bans guns.

The ownership of guns should be illegal in the US.
