Everybody knows what a Barbie is, and mostly every girl owns at least one. Our childhood was based on Barbies. As a little girl, I found so much satisfaction and happiness in dressing my Barbies and brushing their hair. When I was little I had about twenty Barbies which I still have hidden in my closet. The first Barbie doll was invented in 1959 by Ruth Handler. Ruth Handler was a co-worker of Mattel. In case you don’t know what Mattel is, Mattel is a toy company       founded in 1945. Ruth had a daughter whose name is nothing but Barbara which was the inspiration in Barbie’s name. At the American Toy Fair in New York City is where the Barbie doll was introduced to the world for the first time. The main goal of the Barbie doll is to be a teenage fashion doll. Of course, how can we forget about the legendary “Ken” doll. It’s a bit shocking that Ruth will create a doll which was inspired by her daughter and it’s even named after her. However, it’s more shocking that she would do it again which she did. By naming the Ken doll after her son and introducing it two years later after the Barbie doll was introduce in 1961.

Barbies were first made of porcelain when Mattel used to make them. But, now the materials used to make Barbies have changed over the years. Back in 2014 Barbie dolls were made out of soft vinyl, elastomer, and PBT in order to provide more flexibility and more movement to the modern day Barbies. The way that Barbies are made and the way we view them have changed dramatically over time. According to www.thoughtco.com it says, “The full name of the first doll was Barbie Millicent Roberts, and she was from Willows, Wisconsin. Barbie’s job was a teenager fashion model. Now, however, the doll has been made in versions connected to over 125 different careers, including President of the United States”. Barbies have not only changed from careers and different materials. They have also changed culturally because Barbies always used to come as a blond or brunette. In 1961, red hair dolls were added, and in 1980 the first African American and Hispanic Barbies were brought to life.

First the Barbies were sold at three dollars, and in the first year that the dolls were introduced which was in 1959 three hundred thousand Barbies were sold. Till now the best selling Barbie back in 1992 was a Barbie with extremely long hair. Her hair went from the top of her head to her toes. Since Ruth Handler was the one responsible for the creation of Barbie, she calls herself Barbie’s mom. Barbies have improved and changed since the first time it was made. Thanks to brand new technology nowadays Barbies have improved. Now, Barbies are all over the world and sold mostly everywhere. You can choose what kind of Barbie you want, their skin tone, hair color, and even culturally. In fact, Barbies became so famous that a song was made to represent Barbies.
