The Baltimore Ravens have agreed to a deal with restricted free agent receiver Willie Snead on Friday April 20th. Snead was a restricted free agent which means any contract he agrees to with a team, the Saints would have five days to match that deal for the player. The Saints have recently announced that they will not be resigning Snead and he will be a Raven next year. The final deal  was 2 years/ $7.5 million with up to $3.0 million in incentives. This signing came after also signing free agent receivers Michael Crabtree and “Smokey” John Brown.  This signing is also coming right before the draft and could possibly affect the Raven’s draft plans.

Why this signing was good for the Ravens

The Ravens set out a goal at the beginning of this offseason to add more weapons around quarterback Joe Flacco. Those positions being receivers and tight end. So far, they have made a couple of good quality moves that will help get the Ravens back to being a dynamic offense. Willie Snead is definitely going to contribute to that. Snead primarily played in the slot position and had a breakout year when signing with the Saints a couple of years ago. Snead is a quick and explosive route runner whos nickname in New Orleans was “Mr. Reliable “. He has great hands and creates a lot of separation running his routes. Marty Morningwheg the offensive coordinator did get things working well towards the end of the season. He utilized the slot receivers a lot in intermediate routes. This will allow Snead to have a big opportunity to have production in this system. Overall, Snead is a very good role player who has potential in this offense to have a breakout season.

How it affects the Raven’s Draft

The Ravens have always had the draft mentality that you always take the best player available. Whether it be on offense or defense. This means that it all depends who is available at pick number 16 if they pick their. That being said the Ravens will have their draft prioritized on the offensive side of the ball especially receiver and tight end. I would be fine with the Snead signing as long as we draft a receiver in the first two rounds of the draft. This signing can be bad if the Ravens think that they are now comfortable at the position after adding Snead. They still need to add a young player that can be a number one receiver in this offense like D.J Moore or Calvin Ridley. I do think that the Ravens are looking to trade back in the first round of the draft and will look for a tight end in round one such as Hayden Hurst from South Carolina or Dallas Goedert from South Dakota State. They could the take a good receiver on day two of the draft. If the Ravens don’t get satisfied so far they can really transform this offense for the better.

Overall, this was a good signing for multiple reasons. It gives the Ravens another weapon on offense and more depth at a position at need. It still needs to be stressed that the Ravens are NOT done at adding more talent on offense this off season. They should continue to add talent around Flacco through the early rounds of the draft. The Ravens are taking a risk on Snead after coming off a suspension and a injury prone season. Although, when he was healthy he was a 1,00 yard receiver that has a ton of upside.
