What Is Chocolate?

Chocolate is a type of brown, sweet food that is made up of cocoa beans. Chocolate is usually made in the form of blocks, pastes, and liquids. It can also be used as flavoring for many other ingredients in other certain foods. In order to make chocolate, cocoa beans must be fermented so that flavor is developed, but they have a bitter taste which can be intense. When the fermentation is complete, the cocoa beans are cleaned and dried and are roasted. To produce cocoa nibs to ground into cocoa mass, the shells of the beans are removed. Cocoa mass is an unadulterated version of chocolate, but instead it is rough. By heating, the cocoa mass is liquefied and it is then called chocolate liquor. Once the chocolate liquor is processed and cooled, it is made into its two components, which are cocoa butter and cocoa solids. Today, chocolate is consumed in the form of sweet chocolate, which is a combination of vegetable oils, sugar, cocoa butter, and cocoa solids.

Throughout the world, chocolate has become one of the most popular flavors and food types. A variety of food and desserts involve chocolate, which includes: chocolate brownies, chocolate chip cookies, mousse, pudding, cakes and candy. Chocolate has also become a tradition for many holidays, including Valentine’s Day, Hanukkah, Easter, and Halloween. Some people like milk chocolate, some white chocolate, and others dark chocolate. There are even some people that do not like chocolate at all. People crave chocolate because it is good! It tastes good and it smells good. When I eat chocolate I feel happy.

Milk chocolate contains sugar, a small amount of cocoa butter and cocoa solids, and milk powder. Dark chocolate has the highest percent of cocoa solids and cocoa butter of all types of chocolate. It also contains 70%  cocoa. White chocolate, however, does not have any cocoa solids and only contains a small amount of cocoa butter, sugar, and milk. White chocolate contains only 35% cocoa.

Some studies of dark chocolate have shown that it is beneficial for your health. It has a high level of antioxidants which are helpful for eliminating toxins that can cause diseases. White chocolate is not good if you want to lose weight because it is rich in calories.  Eating a small amount of chocolate is okay, but not everyday. I love milk and dark chocolate but my parents only like milk chocolate and my grandma does not like chocolate at all.
