~Painting With Blood ~

Blood spatter analysis are the patterns of bloodstains found in crime scenes. You can use the physics of fluids from blood spatter to help solve a crime scene. Blood spatter can determine the direction blood travels, angle of impact, the blood’s origin point, and the manner of death based on the velocity. This can aid in solving crimes, because it can lead to clues of identifying and describing the weapon used on a person. In which they could’ve been killed or injured previously on the crime scene.“It will reveal to the trained eye how many times the weapon or weapons were used, and the distance between the victim and the attacker,” says Stuart M Robinson. Mathematics is also included in the spatter analysis, for measurements play a big role, in finding velocity, and the diameter of a blood drop. Blood spatter can also create leads in recreating the crime.

Hypothesis:

If the height where the blood drops increases, then the time will increase as well.

 

Materials:

  • A jar of a substance that will act as blood
  • 1 legal sized paper
  • Pencil/pen, eraser
  • Dropper
  • Timer
  • 2 Meter sticks
  • Calculator

Additional: An apron, dark, or old clothes are recommended to wear to avoid stains on clothing.

 

Procedure:

  1. Set a paper on the floor
  2. Have your blood substance nearby with a dropper, and a timer ready
  3. Have someone record the amount of time it takes for the blood to drop
  4. Use your dropper to let go of a single blood drop from a height of 5 cm on the paper
  5. Draw a circle around the drop, write down it’s time and make a sketch
  6. Use the equation: Vf=Vi+at (Vf is final velocity; Vi is initial velocity; a is acceleration          ( 9.8 m/s2); t is time)
  7. Measure the diameter of the drop
  8. Repeat the experiment using the distances that continue: 0.25; 0.50; 0;75;1Related image

Conclusion:

My conclusion is very difficult to confirm, because of the odd numbers that came out in my data. I thought that if the height where the blood drops increases, then the time will increase as well. My data gets to increase, but soon reaches a point where it decreases. All the numbers in our data resulted in decimals, and resulted without a standard pattern. My data rejects my hypothesis, because even when the numbers increase, they end up decreasing at the end.

I am not 100% confident with my data’s accuracy. There were two thing I wasn’t comfortable with: the, time, and pressure performed on the dropper. I was very confused by the time the drops were getting, and had wanted to do it again. Although, the group wasn’t worried about the time. I felt like I was perhaps stopping it too fast. There was one occasion, where the blood was dropped earlier, and I couldn’t get the time. And once, the blood didn’t drop as fast, so I had to reset the time, only to find that it had already been dropped. There were times where the dropper wasn’t releasing the blood drops like the times before.

If I had the opportunity to redo the experiment, I would switch jobs so the timer can be tried out with someone else. I would also develop a technique so the blood can drop more similar with the other drops. For example, I can observe closely at how much I’ve filled the dropper, so I can fill the others the same way. Therefore, with my changes it can also be improved by having other people test the jobs, so there is a new and fresh point of view.

After the experiment, I began to think of questions such as why must we multiply 9.8 specifically with our time to get our final velocity. Can’t it be another number? Also, how would people find information in crime scenes, when they themselves didn’t know the original height, or time the blood dropped? Can you really find it all in the diameter? Also, how come the blood remains in a shape, and is not flat like a painting? I learned a great amount with the experiment. I never knew that blood spatter even existed before this experiment. It was quite interesting to learn how information from crime scenes are aided with blood spatter to solve the crime. It was also quite fascinating to watch the blood drop and form a shape on the paper. I also learned that math was included in solving murders and in forensics science.
