In Resident Evil 4, Leon S. Kennedy is sent on a exclusive mission to save the presidents daughter, Ashley Graham, who was kidnapped by a sinister cult. Kennedy is sent to rural Spain where he fights homicidal villagers and meets up with the solo, mysterious spy, Ada Wong. The game was hinted to in 1999 and it underwent a long development period. The game was first developed for PlayStation 2 but it was scratched and redeveloped to be a GameCube exclusive. In the end, Resident Evil 4 was released for PlayStati0n 3, XBox 360, Nintendo GameCube and a few other platforms. Resident Evil 4 won several Game of the Year awards in 2005. The game influenced the evolution of the survival horror  and third person shooter games. The game also made the “over the shoulder” third person shooter perspective more popular. The sequel to the game, Resident Evil 5, was released in 2009. Resident Evil 4 is widely considered to be one of the best games of all time. It is personally my favorite game in the Resident Evil series.

You control Leon S. Kennedy from a third person perspective. The game play capitalizes on action and shootouts in which crowds of enemies surround you in large open areas. There are no crosshairs for the weapons, but there is a laser sight. If you shoot the enemies arms they drop their weapons and if you shoot their feet, they stumble. You can also shoot thrown weapons, such as axes. Depending on the situation, you can also kick down ladders and put them back, jumping out a window, and dodging an enemies attack. You can also deliver a ¨finishing move¨ to a weakened enemy.

The villagers, Los Ganados, were infected by a infestation of Las Plagas. Your item box is a grid case, which can be upgraded to hold more things. You can keep weapons, ammo, and healing items in the box, but key items and treasures are kept in a different menu. You can collect little items, which can be bought and sold to a merchant who appears in several locations throughout the game. The merchant sells first aid sprays, weapons, and can upgrade weapons. He also buys treasures that Leon finds hidden in rooms and mazes.  All weapons have their advantages and disadvantages.

Capcom also added a mini game for the PlayStation 2 release of the game. The mini game, Separate Ways, focuses on Ada Wong and her role in the game and her connection to the series villain, Albert Wesker.
