Do you realize that some things we use today are based on the Ancient Greeks? According to many articles, and time of research, there are inventions, or ideas, that are still useful to us. It was a long way for them to get to where they ended up at, and a long way for us to adjust their inventions for the greater good. Here are a couple of different inventions and ideas.

Theatre was a big hit in Greece. It began as a festival honoring the god Dionysus. It was a contest of the best performance. They performed many tragedies and comedies based on the gods and goddesses or history. There was always a chorus and music to accompany the play. Sophocles, Euripedes, and Aeschylus, were three well-known tragedy playwrights (in the fifth century). They had true talent and creativity. They were some of the good evidence that helped figure out the whole theater idea. Theatron was the name of the theater buildings. “The theaters were large, open-air structures constructed on the slopes of hills. They consisted of three main elements: the orchestra, the skene, and the audience,” (Ancient Greek Theatre.” Greek Theatre. N.p., n.d. Web. 05 May 2016).Theatre has become a big thing in our lives. It’s a common fun activity that led to so much more, such as starring in musicals, or even on tv, and movies!

Concept of democracy was another brilliant idea that the Greeks founded. They were the ones who began the idea. The democracy was a form of government, where all citizens shared the same equal power. “This system was comprised of three separate institutions: the ekklesia, a sovereign governing body that wrote laws and dictated foreign policy; the boule, a council of representatives from the ten Athenian tribes; and the dikasteria, the popular courts in which citizens argued cases before a group of lottery-selected jurors,” ( Staff. “Ancient Greek Democracy.” A&E Television Networks, 01 Jan. 2010. Web. 28 April 2016). We currently have a democracy, though a little adjusted, but yet the idea lives within. We learn a lot about the government from history, and the greeks’ was one of the most common and greatest.

Philosophy was a huge thing in ancient Greece. Most of it can connect with our modern philosophy. Philosophy meant “The love of wisdom”. Before the philosophy of ancient greece, other civilizations used the excuse of magic, superstitions, gods, and rulers to explain things they didn’t understand. But the Greeks had a whole different style. The Greeks studied and pondered about such topics that would help them learn from life without having religion or any of those kinds of excuses involved. It was also used to be able to understand some questions about the world. “In fact the early Greek Philosophers were also scientists who observed and studied the known world, the earth, seas, and mountains here below, and the solar system, planetary motion, and astral phenomena, above,” (Top 10 Inventions and Discoveries of Ancient Greece. AncientHistoryLists. N.p., 22 Oct. 2014. Web. 28 Apr. 2016). Without their knowledge, it could have taken civilization a longer time to make these discoveries!

Medicine was a mix of both physical and spiritual. “The ancient Greeks initially regarded illness as a divine punishment and healing as, quite literally, a gift from the gods,” (Greek Medicine. Ancient History Encyclopedia. N.p., n.d. Web. 29 April 2016). At first they believed in the god of Asclepius, who was a dispenser of healing, and a skilled doctor, who would give the patients advice in dreams. But a wall finally began to separate the magic and reality once Hippocrates put out his ideas. Hippocrates was a famous and skilled doctor and was considered “The Father of Medicine.” He advised everyone to have a healthy diet, along with good exercise to stay healthy and within shape. He, and his followers, wrote 70 surgery books. He did some pretty strange tests, like cut up people’s bodies, eat vomit and earwax, etc. We can now detect a simple sickness, and are aware of how to solve it casually. Thanks to Hippocrates and all the other medicine that was discovered, sickness can be something a little more easily taken care of. At least we aren’t stressed about it like the old days.

Geometry was something that Greeks saw at first “scientifically.” Instead of guessing like other civilizations, they wanted to reason out the problem and have a depth in understanding. Thales of Miletus was the one who began early Greek geometry. He found a way to solve the problems with a logic reasoning. Pythagoras, Euclid, and Archimedes, were the ones who really developed geometry. And the concept is used so much now in school, work, and it has become very important for use in mathematics.

The Olympics are one of the greatest spectaculars that excites everyone every four years, and were inspired by the original olympics that happened in ancient Greece. They first began in Greece to honor the gods. “The ancient Games included running, long jump, shot put, javelin, boxing, pankration and equestrian events,” (The Sports Events – Ancient Olympics – First Olympic Games History from Olympia. N.p., n.d. Web. 29 Apr. 2016). There would also be a discuss throw, and wrestling. The prize for the winner was given an olive wreath, and later on, a jug of olive oil (it was used to bathe properly, which athletes needed to). It leads us to our modern Olympics. It inspires our talented athletes to work hard to stay healthy and strong.

Who would wake up early without an alarm clock?! Definitely not me! “The Hellenistic engineer and inventor Ctesibius (285–222 BCE) fitted his clepsydras with a dial and pointer for indicating the time, and added elaborate alarm systems which could drop pebbles on a gong or blow trumpets (by forcing bell-jars down into water and taking the compressed air through a beating reed) at pre-set times,”( Top 10 Inventions and Discoveries of Ancient Greece. AncientHistoryLists. N.p., 22 Oct. 2014. Web. 28 Apr. 2016). Of course, the alarm clocks weren’t technological, but they were good enough. And it’s basics led us to having inspiration and creativity to create our technological alarm clocks today.

Overall, the Greeks made basic inventions, but have inspired us to transform them to something more updated and better. There are many more inventions out there, and some are quite interesting. They left a mark in history, and they will never be forgotten.
