Over the past few weeks, there has been a major virus breakout for computers. This virus is called WannaCry. WannaCry is a virus which uses an exploit in the Windows operating system found and leaked by the NSA to get into your computer and encrypt your files without you even doing anything wrong. WannaCry is a form of ransomware. Ransomware is a special type of virus which sneaks its way onto your computer and encrypts your files. After that, a window pops up on your screen, asking you to pay them $300 in BitCoin in order to unencrypt your files in a certain amount of time. Even after you pay, there is no guarantee they will unencrypt your files because there is no way to link your payment to your computer.

A few weeks ago, a bunch of Windows PC’s got infected with this virus and lost all their data. This was such a big deal that that same day, Microsoft released a security patch for this exploit. Unfortunately, many people can’t update their PC’s.

I believe that there is a lesson to be learned here. That lesson is to always update your computer and antivirus system.
